Human Learning First!

Before you can teach your dog, it's important to go over just a couple of REALLY important things to understand from the human side of things. Start here!

Practice Predictor Cues

If part of your dog’s rest and recovery requires you to physically touch him, be sure to use predictor cues before doing so. Tell him where you’re going to touch him or what the sensation will be like. ie... “Foot”, “Rub”, “Poke”, “Ear”. Predictability decreases anxiety about what’s going to happen and when.

Idea: Teach the 123 Pattern Game

This is a great game that teaches your dog focus and safety within predictability. You can practice this from any position that is comfortable for your dog.

Idea: Introduce Nose to Hand Targeting

This is a great game that redirects your dog's attention to you or ultimately can serve as a great alternative recall.

Idea: Play "Capture That"

Reinforce and capture behaviors that are calm and restful. This turns your dog's brain on while keeping the focus on calm choices.

Idea: Teach the Chin Rest Skill

You'll teach your dog to put his chin on the floor or in your hand. This skill teaches stillness and makes for great photo ops!

Idea: Teach your dog to "Play Dead"

This is an adorable party trick and great for veterinary handling!

Idea: Teach the Bucket Game Start Button

Start Button Games are a great way for your dog to learn how to give you consent for a procedure. Introduce the Bucket Game for future consent opportunities. This also teaches great impulse control!
